Chapter 27

Leah waited until she heard Stevi’s bedroom door close before she turned to Trace.

“Sorry.”

“For what?” He shrugged. “That she knows for sure we had sex? Or that she took some of that coffee we need?”

“I don’t need the coffee when I have you.” She wiggled her eyebrows. “And no, I’m not sorry she knows, but, if that was a little weird for you—”

“It wasn’t.” The corner of his lips turned up in a smile. “I hope this is a regular thing, Leah.”

“Breakfast in our underwear with my sister?”

“I’m dressed,” he reminded her. “And you having breakfast dressed just like that for the rest of my life is perfect. And yeah, hanging out with your sister. Your family.”

“I feel kind of bad that she’s basically moved out,” Leah whispered. “But I love having the house to ourselves.”

“Your bedroom is upstairs. Did we make that much noise?” When he finished his omelet, Leah stared at his clean plate in disbelief. He shrugged and winked at her. “Fuel.”

“Why does Duncan want you to call him?”

“You’ve never done this before?” Trace reached for her mug to see if she needed a refill. When he saw that she didn’t, he stood and carried his own mug to the counter.

“Done what…before?” Leah asked with a frown. Her stomach growled, and she decided she needed fuel whether they made it back upstairs for another round or just to shower and get dressed. She picked up her fork and dug into the omelet.

“Had male guests for breakfast?”

“Very few who stayed the night. And never breakfast with…Stevi…around…”

“Why?” He scratched his belly and then rubbed his chest as he returned to the table to sit by her.

“I’m not sure what you’re getting at,” she said as she put her fork down in exchange for her mug. “But I promise you, I wasn’t a virgin last night, and there’ve been guys who stayed overnight. But none that wanted to stick around, and none that I wanted to stick around for a big family breakfast.”

“Except me.”

“Except you.” She watched him over the rim of her mug. “I loved a guy when I was in high school. First love. Gave him everything. We dated for a long time—”

“How long?”

“Couple of years,” she said quietly. “We went to football games together. Prom. He was my first. We broke up when he went to college.”

“Anyone else?”

Leah took a deep breath.

“It’s okay,” he reminded her. “I know I’m not the first guy you’ve been with.”

She laughed softly when he fed her words back to her.

“No. Not really. Yes, I was involved with a few guys.” She shrugged. “But nothing that ever amounted to anything.”

“What about Stevi?”

Leah stared at him silently.

“Leah, darlin’.” He reached for her hand. “I’m just getting the lay of the land. I like your family. I want to be a part of it.”

“You don’t need to know the lay of Stevi’s land, do you?”

“You said Margo was involved with someone and had his baby. What about Stevi and Duncan?”

“Stevi and Duncan.” Leah frowned.
